Writing

In 5th grade, we study 3 types of writing: Opinion, Narrative, and Informational. With each type of writing, we walk through the Writing Process step-by-step. After mini-lessons on certain writing and language standards and after much modeling and samples from myself, students produce writing pieces over multiple days.

Throughout this process, I conference with them in order to guide them in the right direction or to clear up any misunderstandings. In addition, we set criteria together prior to writing as a guideline and checklist for students to use as a guide to self- and peer-assess throughout their writing time.

In addition to lengthy types of writing, we also give them opportunities to Quick Write about various topics, so they can just get out thoughts and ideas. This is a great way to strengthen their writing, help them to become creative, and allow them to build the ability to write over extended times.

If at any time you have any questions about writing time, let me know or come in and visit during this time.
