Reading

During Reading class in 5th grade, we read novels and really use them as tools to practice many skills. For example, we will dig deeper (close read) to truly get a full understanding of what the author is telling us through their writing. We will find proof (evidence) in the text to make inferences.

Additionally, we will work with words by breaking them down into parts (prefix, suffix, and root word) to better understand the meaning of words that are unknown. We use context clues (words or pieces around the word) to also help us understand new words.

Throughout the year, we work on figurative language - which writer's use to help paint a picture in our mind. These examples can also be transferred to our own writing for enhancements.

Another area we focus on is understanding (comprehending) what we read. We use a variety of strategies to assist us in comprehending what we read: we summarize, paraphrase, visualize, etc.

If at any time you have any questions about Reading time, please let me know or come visit our class during this time to observe what we are doing!
